gilgamesh 1

The people of Uruk are getting tired of Gilgamesh ruling.
Gilgamesh keeps having dreams. He has one about a star falling and another about a ax. When he has these dreams he goes to his mother Ninsun. She tells him that a stranger is going to come.
Enkidu is a man that lives with the animals. he is like their family he eats drinks and lives with them. The hunters set traps up to catch the animals but if Enkidu sees that he will try to help them get loose. The hunters son saw that and told his dad. the hunter sent his son to Uruk to ask Gilgamesh to send out a prostitute to sleep with Enkidu so the animals would leave him.
the prostitute takes him to a shepered home where they clean him up and make him look like a man. one day when they are there a man who was going to get a bride from Uruk came.
Enkidu didn't think that it was the kings birthright to be able to sleep with all the virgins.
When the prostutite leads him to Uruk people start cheering for him and that makes Gilgamesh mad so they get in a fight.
When they get up they look at each other and see themselves.

Immortality

Five Steps to Immortality
1. A healthy Diet
Eating a healthy diet wont stop you from dying but it may incress your natural lifespan.
Eating a healthy diet could add up to 20 years to your natural life.
but even then some people eating a healthy diet can still die before they get to 100

2. exercise can help you live longer. some think that you don't need to be active if you eat good but others think that if you don't have a good diet it doesn't matter as long as you exercise. but if you put both of them together it is a great combination.
You can't just be active physicaly but you also have to be active mentaly. If you have a purpose of being here you will live longer. You need to get involed in something and keep.
When it comes to your brain you either use it or lose it.

3. Taking Supplements
There are many things that this consist of. There are nutritional supplements, drugs, and others.
They are good for you but a healthy diet without supplements is still better than a nonhealthy diet with supplements.
Supplements can give you more nutrints then can be found in nature but they can't stop you from dying.

4.Rejuvenation therapies
The tecknowlagy that we are using to keep us alive is probably the most important step.
we don't just have one treatment that will add years to our lives but instead we treat problems one by one.

5.Cryonics
its not going to happen in our lives but immortality will happen.
You can freeze yourself and come back to life. though critics think that when you try to freeze the body the cells will explode.
It is becoming more efficint and safer.

Antigone "Conscientious Objection" GRADE THIS ONE

Conscientious objection is when you object to something because of your beliefs. You go against the law because you are supporting your beliefs and what you think is the right thing to do.
Antigone shows conscientious objection by burying her brother. She knows that it is wrong and Creon said that he is to be unburied while his other brother is buried. She knows that the right thing to do is to honor Polynices. She knows that if anybody else would die like a husband or a child she could always get new ones but this is her brother she can never get another brother especially one like him. She has to honor her brother and will risk her life to do it. After she gets caught barring him in the sand by the guards Creon banishes her to a cave to live by herself until she dies. She will never be the wife or the mother that she wanted but she doesn't care because she honored her brother, she did what she thought was right. "Gods of our fathers, my city, my home,
Rulers of Thebes! Time stays no longer
Last daughter of your royal house
Go I, his prisoner, because I honored
Those things to which honour truly belongs (151).
The whole time she knew that she was going to be punished because she was breaking the law but she knew in her heart that she had to honor her brother so she risked it all and buried him.
I think that she did the right thing. She honored her brother and her family. She did break the law but she had to because that is what she believed was the right thing to do and she could have never lived with herself to know that she had let her brother just sit there and rot. I think that she is brave because she stood up to the king and told him that it was wrong to leave him there.
In the 21st century I think that people would have agreed with her and supported her. Buring him doesn’t affect anyone else and she thought that it needed to be done so she should be able to do it. She would somewhat be considered a hero because she is standing up for her family and her believes.

Despair in The Theban Plays

dispair is to give up hope or be hopless. this is shown in both the plays. In oedipus he gives up hope when he finds out what he has done. he stabs his eyes out and banishes himself from his own country. In antigone she gives up hope when she can't burry her brother and she gets banished to the cave to die or live the rest of her life alone.

Ignorance vs. Guilt

I think that if you don't know that it is a crime you should still get blamed because you did it. ignorance is not an excuse.
I think that he did the right thing by banishing himself because it shows that he is true to his word. he killed the king and just because he didn't know that it was is no excuse.
in a modern day trial you would still get punished even if you didn't know that it was wronge so i think that he desirved to get punished.

antigone

ismene and antigone are talking and antigone desides that she will burry their brother. she knows that she will get in truble if she does it but she thinks it is worth it to honor her brother. The king had said that he was to be left there to rot and be eaten by animals. Sentry comes and says how the guards had fallen asleep and that the body had been covered with dirt.
the king tells them they need to find the one that did it.
they uncover the body and Antigone comes back and they catch her.
the king is mad and says he will kill her.
ismene comes and tells them that she helped even though she didn't because she didn't want to live without her sister.
Haemon comes and supports the king, even though he thinks what antigone did was right.
the king sentences antigone to be locked in a cave untill she dies.
Haemon is sad that she is being locked up so he kills himself.
when his mother finds this out she also kills herself, so the king is left all alone.

King Oedipus

Creon comes and tells Oedipus that there was a leader before Oedipus and his name was Laius. He says that Laius had a horrible death and that only one person survived. They were attacked by robbers.
Oedipus became the leader because he solved the riddle.
Oedipus says that if you did it come forward and you will just be banished. and if you know who it was and come forward you will get a reward.
Nobody admitted to killing him.
Teiresias comes in and tells them that he is the cursed polluter of this land. She says how he is to go blind. he was born killed his father married his mother and fathered his own syblings.
It goes on and he finds out that his mother hurt his ankles and left him for dead. A shepherd came along and found him and gave him to the messenger to care for.
The shepherd comes and tells the story.
Oedipus relizes that it was he who killed his father and married his mother.
Teiresias hangs herself because she relizes what she has done.
Oedipus then takes a brooch and stabs himself in the eyes so he can never see again.
and lastly he is led away because he banished himself before he knew his story.

introduction to the thebean plays

Tragedies were presented in the Athenian theatre at certain annual festival. the theatre would hold up to 17,000 spectators. the orgins of the art of drama, the roots lie not only the human instinct for narrative and impersonation, but also the instinct for the ritualistic expression and interpretation of the power of natual forces, the cycle of life and death, and the nexus of past, present, and future. and its prime function is the expression of the feelings and reasonings excited by man's battles with the eternal forces that appear to govern his life.
The chorus has a double function, it is a actor and a commentator.
religion is a major characteristic in Greek Tragedy
these plays are hard to analyse, impossible to translate.
you cant find english substitutes for Greek idiom and terminology is difficult enough in prose more difficult of all in drama
the meanings of god and king has changed greatly
the theatre was an open air area with a couple entrences.

book 23

this book is where O tells P that it is him. she doesn't believe him at first because she has waited so long for this and doesn't want it to not be true.

They come up with a plan and move the wepons in this book too.

i do not like the suitors. i think that they are just out to get the money and the house. and i think that if penelope isn't ready to move on then they should just leave her alone and let her be. i don't think that it is fair for them to go in T's house and eat all his food and try to take his mom away. Then when T tells them to leave they think that he is crazy and that if O comes back they can kill him so they can get Pemelope.

i think that she is smart. i think that if she really doesn't want to get remarried she shouldn't have to. she was smart to weave the shround for her father and undo it at night because it gave her more time.

T is changing because he is becomeing a man. he had to grow up wihtout his father. and now he is having to find out if his dad is still alive or if he is really dead. He has to find out and then he has to get his mom remarried. He is a brave man now because he sets off on an adventure and doesn't know what hes going to find.

book 2 is prety much about how Anthna came and told him what he had to do the night before. so he is calling a meeting and everybody is telling him that he is crazy and that if his dad is alive it won't matter because they can take him because there are alot more of them then just his dad. At the end T is leaving.

in book 5 Odysseus and Calypso are on an island. they have been there for 19 years. Calypso is a sex godess and she offerse O imortality if he agrees to be her husband. He says no because he would rather die then have to spend forever without his wife. even though he does stuff with Calypso he still loves his wife, he crys all day because he misses her and feels guilty.

I think that Odysseus is a good man because he stays comited to his wife and marriage with penelope.

Poseidon is mad because all the other gods chose O's fait without asking him, so he trys to stop O from getting home.

The end of book 5 is when O swimms to Phaeacians and covers himself with leaves.

I think that big O is a bad leader.
He ony looks out for himself. he lets all his men get killed.
His plans never work out and he ends up losing his men
Like when he tries to talk to the cyclopes he loses six men.
He also takes them to circle where some of his men get turned into pigs.
thats y i think that Big O is a bad leader.

macy garwood said...

O is just out to get goods and riches from people. He stole the ram and is now trying to sacrafice it to Zues. He doesn't accept it because it isn't his ram.
He is very gredy and is just out to help himself and get more riches for himself. His selfishness is what keeps getting them in truble and gets his men killed

The ritual he does is he sacrofices the ram. he does it several times so he can get closer to the gods. He does it once and zues doesnt acept it.
he digs a pit and puts milk honey then sweet wine, and pure water. then he promises that when he gets to Ithaca he will sacrifice a splended barren heifer and precious gifts.
he then slits the throat of the ram over the pit so the spirits can drink it and he can talk to them
some of the shades he talks to are:
his comrade Elpenor. he asks T to burn all the belongings of his so he can lift his spirt.
theban tiresias. she tells im how he can make it home. she gives him advice so he can make it without getting in trouble. she pretty much tells him his future and says just listen to her and he will be ok.
his mother is probably the most important person he talks to. she tells him that he is still the king and that penelopi is still there waiting for him.
he learns that he will be ok and make it back safly.
i think that he is a hero because he doesn't give up. he is doing whatever it takes to get back to his wife and family. he is also becoming a better listener to the gods.

Eumaeus is a nice man. he takes in O and gives him food and lets him stay in his home even though O is a complete stranger.
we find out that Eumaeus used to work for Odysseus. he was the nices master that eumaeus had ever had. and he wished that he could come back.
i think that he desguised himself because he isn't ready to reviel himself yet. he needs to make it back home and get into his kingdom because he cant go in as himself or he will be killed. He has a plan to get back in and his meeting with Eumaeus proves that it is going to work.
Eumaeus treats him realy well. he was treated well by his master and wants to do the same to others even if it is a stranger.

He lies to her because he isn't ready to tell her. but he tells her that he has met O and that he is alive and well and will be returning very soon. She is starting to get tired of waiting for O because she just misses him so much. she is getting tired of all the suitors taking advantage of her son because she doesn't want to marry any of them.
Eurycleia is cleaning his feet off and she sees the scar and knows that it is O. she is so happy and exited that he is back. she is like his mother she raised him and has been there since he was born. O tells her that she can't tell anybody because he doesn't want the suitors to find out. I think that she is a very nice and caring person. and she keeps his secret because she doesnt want anything to happen to him. she is like part of the family.
on page 398 Penelope says that the first person to shot arows through 12 loops in a row she will marry him.

i dont think that the women are important in this story. the only girls that you hear about are his mom and his nanny. women don't really seem to get a choice. like how penelope has to get married. i think that they only really care about the godesses.
We are leaning that she is finally starting to give up on O. he is right there she just doesn't relize it. i don't blame her or think that she is a bad person because she waited 20 years for someone who everybody told her was dead. i think that she is strong for waiting that long.
i think that all the suitors are very disloyal to him. even if they think he is dead they are in his land and taking stuff from him. and then they make fun of him before he does the chalange even though they don't know its him.
I think that Penelope, T, and eurcila are loyal to him. they never stoped beliving in him.
i think that in the next book there will be a fight because the suitors have been there for years trying to win penelope and now a stranger just walks in and wins.

In this book O kills the suitors. he shows no mercy towards them he doesn't like that they were there taking advantage of his son and trying to steal his wife. O, T, E, and Phil only have little wounds. they killed all but two of the suitors.
then after they kill them they make the unloyal maids clean it all up. after it is clean they take them outside and hang them all.
I think that T and O are still heros but i don't think much of them anymore. they didn't need to kill everybody. i know they were mad but there was better ways they could handle it. Back then it didn't matter and it made them look like heros because it showed that they were strong and powerful and that nobody can mess with them.
and it just shows how things have changed since then.

i think that she is just scared to acept it. she has had to live without him and now she thinks the gods are tricking her. she also wants O so bad she doesnt want to get happy and have it not be him and have to lose him again. She probably feels bad for giving up on him at the end. she waited for him for so long then agreed to marry someone else so she feels guilty.
this has to deal with emotions because she is so happy that it would hurt her so bad if it ended up not being true.

book 10

In this book O contiues to tell his story. It tells how he reached Aeaea, isle of fairhaird circe.
It also tells how the others get killed.

book 9

O starts to tell his story to Emual. he tells about how when he leaves the war. it tells how two goddesses wanted him as their husband. he told them no because he is staying loyal to his wife.
it tells how they get in the fight with the cyclops and how some of the men are killed.

book 5

Clypso is told that she needs to let O go. It tells how O stayed there and cried all the time because all he wanted was to go home and see his wife and family.
Calypso had offered him to be immortal if he stayed with her but he would rather die then have to spend forever missing his wife.
Calypso helps him build a ship and gives him gifts and food and send him off.
On his way home posiden gets mad because the other gods didn't ask him what he thought, so he makes a huge storm to try to stop O.
Ino comes and gives him the shaw of immortality so he can swim on to land. he throws it back when he gets to the land.
at the end of theis book he covers himself in leaves and goes to sleep.

book 2

T calls a meeting and tells them that he is going out to find his dad. They tell him he is crazy that his dad is dead so he shouldn't bother. T says that his dad is going to come back and the other suitors will have to leave because P only wants O.
They say that if T and O comes back they will kill them because it will be all the suitors against the two of them. at the end he leaves

book 1

All the gods have a meeting and Anthena tells them they should let O go. Zues tells her no and she tells him that it is the best thing for T.
T is having a feast for all the suitors when Antena comes as mentes and tells them that O is not dead and will get free soon and come back to his land. then T tells her that she is wrong. she wxplans how the suitors are just using him for his money and mom . he says that if his dad was alive he would be back. they already have a tomb for him, he is dead. Anthena tells him to go get the suitors out of his house and look for his dad. If his dad really is dead he can come back and marry off his mom.
